Module “Smart Building” – 1
st PART
The assignment 1 for this semester will be the design or reproduction of an existing residential
building (one or two family building), checking – in detail- it against the 25 principles of Building
Biology.
Scope of the task
You design a new or reproduce an existing residential building of at least 120m² and two floors.
Check it in detail against the 25 principles of Building Biology.
Deliverables:
• Implementation plan 1:1000 (neighborhood, e.g. Google Earth)
• Floor plan(s) 1:100
• Elevations, sections: 1:100
• Project description (aprox. 5-10 pages (plans separately); describing the concept, location,
climate and the building materials used – U-values and further descriptive parameter will follow
in a next step. Include all aspects of energy consumption, like electrical appliances, heating
and/or cooling: installed capacity, monthly hours of usage, metered energy consumption (if
available).

Module “Smart Building” – 2
nd PART
The assignment 2 for this semester will be the energy balance of your building from the 1st
assignment.
Scope of the task
• Calculation of the U-value of the whole building
Deliverables:
• Calculation of U-value of each building component. Compare these values to the Energy
Code of your country of origin and/or the recommendations from your Green Building Council.
• Calculation of the overall U-value of the building.
• Calculation of Heating Degree Days and Cooling Degree Days. Discuss the definition of
your base temperature and explain the decision for the temperature of your choice.
• Elaboration of the Psychrometric Chart, including the Overlay “Givoni”: describe the
result, discuss critically Givoni’s recommendations (“not possible, because …” – if it is
the case) and suggest improvements of your building following Givoni’s
recommendation.
• Elaborate on typical situations concerning the indoor comfort – so basically a Winter
and a Summer situation – and check the PMV calculator. Discuss the findings – do you
agree with the PMV result, or do you have a different perception – and analyse how you
could use the finding in order to reduce your energy consumption (e.g. increase
ventilation/air speed, increase the clo-factor, etc.).
• Elaborate an alternative energy balance, implementing improvements in every sector
possible.

Module “Smart Building” – 3
rd PART
The assignment 3 for this semester will be the development of a concept for a Smart hospital.
Scope of the task
You design a new or reproduce an existing health post and implement smart building concepts.
Your health post is supposed to be in a difficult neighborhood, therefore strict access control is
necessary.
Deliverables:
• Implementation plan 1:1000 (neighborhood, e.g. Google Earth)
• Floor plan(s) 1:100
• Project description (aprox. 5-10 pages (plans separately)), describing the smart building
concept in detail, with references to products offered on the market.
Module “Smart Building” – final submittal

• Analysis of local climate in country of origin & typical building concepts
• Residential building with tasks described (see 1st assignment)
• Energy balance of own building (see also 2
nd assignment)
• Smart hospital concept (see also 3
rd assignment)
Mind the formal aspects of your delivery! It has to be ONE final document, duly formatted
and organized.
